N*ena was a* young Jewish woman who fled Austria during the late 1930s because of the Nazis. She was strong and independent and eventually landed in New York City, where she built a new life. I included items from three generations—the original image of Nena at age 21, a lace top from her daughter and a necklace that had been passed down to her granddaughter in California—to make this an authentic connection between the past and present. This image is from my series Outliers, which explores the roots of my feminine strength and feelings of disconnection using mid-century archival photographs.
