Steven Crawford Single Image Winner flowers/plants/fruit
My artwork reflects the belief that a photograph should be conceived before the image is captured in the camera. This series of postmortem floral portraits—shot on Polaroid negative film and drawing on my knowledge of lighting and the history of photography—embodies our fascination with the inevitability of time, as they seem to decay before our eyes. The flowers were photographed in different stages of deterioration. After the film was exposed, the negatives were purposely not cleared of chemicals, but were also left to decay, some for up to two years. In this way, the process mirrored the subject matter.
