  1. SEBASTIÃO SALGADO: THE AMAZONIA PROJECT

The undisputed master of the long-term photo essay—measured against any metric of theme, purpose and importance—chose the Brazilian Amazon as his ultimate project, one that comprised dozens of expeditions over a seven-year period. In this exclusive interview, Salgado shares the ideals and emotions that fuel his ongoing documentation of environments and people at risk.

  2. SURREAL WOMEN: A CENTURY OF FANTASTIC VISIONS

A roll call of the most dazzling surrealist photographers of the 20th century reveals a keen parity between men and women—and one could argue on behalf of the latter being predominant. We look at six female pioneers who used photography to explore the groundbreaking artistic movement that continues to inspire generations of surrealist women.

  3. ROBI CHAKRABORTY’s INDIA: TRADITION AND TRANSITION

Born and raised in Kolkata, Robi Chakraborty enjoyed a successful career as a commercial and press photographer before turning his attention in recent years to cities and rural villages in India. Now based in the United States, his incisive and empathetic images of his native country focus on traditional values and ways of life that are being absorbed into an increasingly modernized and homogenized world.

  4. AIMEE McCRORY: SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE

The fine art photographer Aimee McCrory utilized a complex cinematic approach to her unusual, refreshingly frank photo series on the joys and challenges, highs and lows, darkness and light of long-term relationships. Done in collaboration with her husband Don during the pandemic, the work was a way to cope with her emotions and uncertainties during a perilous time.

Our esteem for fine art images we may be lucky enough to own, however, is rooted in something more complex, especially for those of us who happen to practice fine art photography. So, we reached out to a handful of photographers whose work has appeared in Black & White for insights on their favorite prints.
