No. 171 April 2025 : Black & White : For Collectors of Fine Photography

Issue No. 171

  1. BALDWIN LEE: LIFE BEYOND THE FRAME

Having founded the photography program at the University of Tennessee, Baldwin Lee embarked on a series of road trips photographing economically disadvantaged Black Americans throughout the Deep South. Over the course of eight years he compiled one of the largest and most significant bodies of work on this region since Walker Evans, notable for presenting uncomfortable truths with honesty, compassion and respect.

  2. BYRON SMITH: UKRAINE DIARY

Lauded for his gripping and humane photographs of conflict zones in Iraq, Sudan and Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Smith more recently has focused on the human and physical emotional fallout from Russia’s ongoing incursion into Ukraine. Like his spiritual forebears Capa and Chim, Smith captures despair, but also evokes defiance and determination in the face of unspeakable aggression.

  3. ALLAN BARNES: DETROIT LANDSCAPES

Bay Area photographer and educator Allan Barnes specializes in historic photographic processes and portraiture using 19th-century cameras and techniques. His first body of work, relatively unseen for decades, was large-format documentation of the abandoned buildings and factories of his native Detroit beginning in the early 1980s. Barnes revisits that era and those images in our exclusive feature.

  4. ROBERT KALMAN: NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM

“I think everyone has the urge to feel important, to be seen in an authentic, respectful, dignified way. That’s what my work is about.” That’s the animating philosophy of Robert Kalman’s documentary portraiture, which he’s practiced for forty years. His large-format photographs of strangers are remarkable for the way they reveal a sense of shared experience and identity that all of us can relate to.

  5. FRANCES BENJAMIN JOHNSTON: EMANCIPATED IMAGES

Born during the Civil War, Johnston is acknowledged as this country’s first female photojournalist, one whose career spanned half a century. She photographed politicians and cultural figures like Susan B. Anthony and Booker T. Washington, made notable series on African Americans and Native Americans, and was a prominent advocate for other women in photography. We present an in-depth look at her remarkable achievements.
